mom and baby

When my husband Eric and I discovered we were expecting our third child, we wanted a more personal and supportive. After having hospital births for our first two, I really wanted to explore midwifery care and deliver our baby, Mia, a different way. We chose Ode’imin (formerly the Birth Centre).

I’d faced a number of challenges with my births, particularly with my second which was during the pandemic. The lack of personal choice and patient-centered care in the hospital made me feel unheard. I had breastfeeding struggles and I felt so alone and isolated. It was all so stressful. A cousin of mine had a great midwifery experience, and I wanted that feeling for Mia's birth.

My experience with Ode’imin was transformative. From my first appointment, I felt the difference. Instead of a rushed 10-minute visit with an OB, I had a 40-minute conversation where I was listened to, informed, and empowered. The care was comprehensive and personal—designed not just for the baby but for myself as a whole person.

My labor with Mia was quick, and Ode’imin provided the calm, supportive environment I had hoped for. I labored in a beautiful room, got into the birthing tub, and was able to do my thing while the midwives ensured I was safe and comfortable. Just hours after giving birth, I was back home, resting in my own bed, with the reassurance of follow-up visits from my midwife.

One of the most meaningful moments came after Mia's birth when the birth assistant asked if we knew what song was playing during the delivery. It was Bob Marley’s "Jamming." That small detail, noticed and shared by the team, made me feel cared for and connected.
