Punam Mehta
Dr. Punam Mehta (she/her/hers) is a feminist teacher-scholar with a doctorate in Applied Health Sciences, an MSc in Community Health Sciences, a Bachelor of Arts Honours in Women’s Studies, and a Bachelor of Science in Biology. She is a member of the Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba, where she teaches Health Promotion and Family Health. She is formally trained as an infectious disease epidemiologist but has many academic interests, including advocating for reproductive justice. In her research, teaching, and service, she believes in meeting people where they are at.
Her teaching tenure includes many years of teaching Women’s and Gender Studies courses that include topics such as Feminist Approaches to Addictions, Housewives’ Lives, and Feminist Approaches to Wellness. She has co-published many peer-reviewed papers, authored a book about decolonizing yoga, and is currently working on her second book project! Punam has also taught yoga to mothers with addictions in Winnipeg, where she completed a body mapping project. She now uses yoga and mindfulness in the feminist classroom to promote discussion about mental health and wellness for university students. In her spare time, she cares for the people she loves and enjoys attending film festivals and participating in Winnipeg's thriving creative arts community. Finally, she has volunteered with many community organizations in Winnipeg, such as WHC, for the past two decades.
